MORAGA — Calvin Hermanson scored 22 points, Emmett Naar had 11 points and nine assists, and No. 21 Saint Mary’s used a big second half to beat sloppy Cal State Fullerton 76-57 on Wednesday night.

Jock Landale contributed 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting despite dealing with foul trouble and facing constant defensive pressure. The Gaels (3-0) converted 21 Fullerton turnovers into 31 points.

Junior Kyle Allman Jr. scored 13 points for Fullerton, while sophomore Jackson Rowe had 13 points, five rebounds and tied a career high with three blocked shots.

The Titans (0-2) put on a far better showing than in their forgettable 84-42 season-opening loss to No. 10 USC last week, though they didn’t help themselves by going just 12 for 19 from the free-throw line.

“This game was 100 percent on us,” Fullerton coach Dedrique Taylor said. “I don’t mean that in any disrespect to St. Mary’s. That is a very, very good ball club that we played tonight.

“I thought our group competed differently tonight than what we did at USC. I thought we competed and gave ourselves a chance. If you look at the stats, all the things that happened negatively, were on us.”

This time, Fullerton shot 66.8 percent – 12 for 18 – in the first half but trailed 39-31 at the break in large part because of 13 turnovers.

Naar’s three-point play with 7:33 before halftime was part of a 7-0 Saint Mary’s run, but the Gaels couldn’t pull away.

Fullerton, picked to finish third in the Big West Conference, committed 11 turnovers by the 5:55 mark of the first half while taking just 10 shots but stayed close early hitting six of its first nine shots and using its quickness to push the tempo and fluster the Gaels on defense.

Saint Mary’s moved up a spot in this week’s Associated Press poll and is picked to win the West Coast Conference ahead of NCAA Tournament runner-up and chief rival Gonzaga.

Hermanson’s 3-pointer from the top with 15:08 left gave the Gaels an 11-point lead, their largest to that point.

Just before that, Tanner Krebs hit a 3-pointer and Naar had a layup but the Gaels couldn’t make key defensive stops.

The Titans outrebounded the Gaels 36-26. Sophomore guard Austen Awosika (seven points, four assists) and senior center Arkim Robertson had six rebounds apiece. Redshirt sophomore Jamal Smith added four points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

For several years, St. Mary’s has had one of the most efficient offenses in the country and Wednesday was no different.

The Gaels finished 27 for 56 (48.2 percent) from the floor, 7 for 18 from 3-point range and 15 for 17 from the free-throw line with just eight turnovers. Naar controlled the game from his point guard position, adding three rebounds and no turnovers to his points and assists. The Gaels had assists on 17 of their 27 baskets.

The Titans play Bethesda in their home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Titan Gym.

FULLERTON – Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton closed the regular season with another pitchers’ duel on Saturday night, with the visitors scoring the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning in front of 2,594 at Goodwin Field.

Long Beach, which clinched the Big West Conference title last weekend, took two of three in the season-ending series and finished the season 5-1 against the rival Titans, having swept their annual nonconference series earlier at Blair Field.

Both teams now wait to learn their fate for the 64-team NCAA playoffs, with pairings announced on Monday at 9 a.m. on (ESPNU). Seventh-ranked Long Beach (37-17-1, 20-4 Big West) appears likely to host one of the 16 four-team regionals, while No. 14 Fullerton (34-21, 15-9) is expected to receive an at-large berth. The regional hosts will be announced before the rest of the field on Sunday at 6 p.m.

David Banuelos started the eighth-inning really when he pulled a sharp grounder over the third base bag for a leadoff double. Banuelos took third on a sacrifice bunt by Brooks Stotler, then Laine Huffman and Jarren Duran were hit by pitches to load the bases. That set the table for senior Daniel Jackson, who sent a deep fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly, easily scoring Banuelos.

Long Beach, which won 10 consecutive three-game series to end the season, won 20 conference games for the first time since 1998. With the loss, Fullerton finished third behind Cal Poly SLO (28-28, 16-8).

Long Beach starter Dave Smith went 6-1/3 scoreless innings to lower his Big West-leading ERA to 1.55. The senior righty allowed four singles and two walks with four strikeouts. Four relievers pitched the final 2-2/3 for Long Beach.

Eli Villalobos took over for Smith with one out and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, promptly recording a strikeout before issuing a walk to load the bases. Freshman Zak Baayoun then entered the game and struck out pinch-hitter Niko Pacheco.

Josh Advocate allowed a leadoff single in a scoreless eighth inning, and sophomore Chris Rivera worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 11th save.

In just his third game back after an injury sidelined him for most of the season, starting pitcher Colton Eastman dominated early for Fullerton. He held Long Beach to one hit and and struck out eight in 4-2/3 innings. Eastman has appeared in six games and has allowed just 11 hits and four runs while striking out 24 batters with a 1.86 ERA for the season.

Sophomore Gavin Velasquez (4-3) relieved Eastman. He allowed three hits and one run in 2-2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Fullerton’s Hunter Cullen (2 for 4) was the only player for either team with multiple hits.
