PASADENA — UCLA’s defensive line rose from the bench. They had to get a better look for the game-sealing play.

UCLA receiver Christian Pabico recovered a late on-side kick by Arizona State to secure UCLA’s 44-37 win over the Sun Devils on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

The Bruins (5-5, 3-4 Pac-12) kept their bowl hopes alive with their fifth straight win at home this season and need one more win out of their final two games. They face rival USC at the Coliseum next Saturday at 5 p.m. before finishing the regular season against California at home.

With quarterback Josh Rosen back from a one-game absence, the UCLA offense scored 24 second-half points, including 10 straight points at the beginning of the fourth quarter after Arizona State (5-5, 4-3 Pac-12) tied the game at the end of the third on a blocked punt.

Rosen was 25-for-45 passing with 381 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Jordan Lasley, returning from a three-game suspension for a disciplinary issue, had seven catches for 162 yards and one touchdown.

UCLA allowed 584 yards, including 294 on the ground, but kept the ASU offense out of the end zone in the second half.

During the first 14 minutes of the game, the Bruins dropped a touchdown pass, missed a 36-yard field goal and threw an interception off a tipped pass. On defense, a third-down stop was negated by an offside penalty and the special teams committed two penalties on a single punt return. Arizona State jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

A fingertip and a 27-yard pick-6 suddenly swung momentum toward the Bruins.

At the end of the first quarter, defensive end Marcus Moore tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage that fell into the waiting arms of Nate Meadors, who ran the interception back for a 27-yard touchdown. It was the junior’s first interception since his freshman year.

Rosen tied the game on UCLA’s next drive with a 1-yard touchdown run on a drive that included a 30-yard rush from Pabico and a 23-yard scamper from running back Bolu Olorunfunmi, who paced UCLA’s rushing offense with 79 yards on 15 carries.

ASU responded by running the ball on 10 straight plays for a 75-yard touchdown drive, grinding away at the UCLA defense on the way to the end zone. Manny Wilkins rushed for a 7-yard score, hurdling Mossi Johnson for a 21-14 lead.

The situation looked familiar to the Bruins, who had gotten off to good defensive starts during their past two games to only be broken by one long drive that opened up the flood gates. Not this time.

UCLA bounced back on its defense defensive drive, holding the Sun Devils to a three-and-out. UCLA’s offense scored two field goals after drives stalled inside the ASU 25-yard line and trailed by only one point at halftime, despite giving up 203 rushing yards on 39 carries.

The Sun Devils rushed for only 91 yards on 22 carries in the second half.

UCLA football confident in backup QB Devon Modster

LOS ANGELES — Music blares over the speakers at Spaulding Field and UCLA football players start their pre-practice warm-up lines. The offensive players run from one side of the field, crossing paths with the defensive players who are running from the other.

Lokeni Toailoa leads the linebackers’ line and Devon Modster is at the head of the quarterbacks’ line. They meet in the middle and share a secret handshake, the same one Toailoa usually shares with Josh Rosen. Toailoa wraps Modster in a bear hug when the ritual is complete.

Modster is already proving a worthy replacement for the injured Rosen in practice this week and will need to replace the star junior quarterback again Friday at Utah if Rosen cannot play after suffering multiple undisclosed injuries last weekend.

Modster and fellow backup quarterback Matt Lynch took all the reps during practice Monday and Tuesday. While Rosen could still play Friday without practicing, Modster, who was not available to the media this week, has the full confidence of his coaches and teammates.

“We know Devon can make all the throws,” center Scott Quessenberry said. “We see it out here all the time.”

After redshirting last year, Modster made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter of UCLA’s rout over Hawaii. His first pass attempt, which looked like a short screen, was actually supposed to go 15 yards down field and was nearly intercepted. The former Tesoro High star said last weekend that the appearance, no matter how rocky, helped him adjust to the game last Saturday when he was called into duty suddenly during the third quarter.

After a three-and-out and a lost fumble on his first two drives against the Huskies, Modster led the Bruins on an 11-play, 81-yard touchdown drive. He capped it with a perfectly thrown back-shoulder pass to Darren Andrews for a 4-yard touchdown and finished with 77 yards on 7-for-12 passing.

“He had great confidence,” Fisch said of Modster’s in-game performance. “He showed that during the game and he’s continued to show that this week.”

When Modster came to UCLA last year, it was the first time he had taken a snap from under center. The naturally quiet redshirt freshman is starting to develop his voice and learning to command the huddle, Fisch said. Modster’s increased understanding of the game has him ready to make his first career start if necessary.

“He’s learned a lot from last year to this year,” Quessenberry said, “and if it’s him this week we’re going to block them up and we’re really excited for the opportunity and I’m sure he is too.”

Fisch said he doesn’t plan to alter his play-calling with Modster at quarterback at all. The coach believes in his quarterback.

Before Modster entered the game against Washington, Fisch pulled him aside and asked how he felt.

Modster looked at his coach with a big smile.

“I’m great,” he said.

“If you’re great,” Fisch replied, “then I’m great.”
