Jason Barber, dressed in a sleeveless tuxedo jacket with a red bandana tied around his lower right leg, strapped his electric guitar and led his four bandmates into a string of rock classics in front of at least 100 spectators at the OC Fair.

“This is in honor of the fab four,” Barber said before The Finz played a rendition of The Beatles classic ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand.’

Their ages range from 8-11 and consist of bassist singer Jackson Ecker, lead singer Hudson Fell, drummer Brandon Wink and the youngest of the group, Iggy Morales, who plays the electric piano.

The 12-song set at The Hangar on Friday, July 21 drew a crowd of at least 100, who at times clapped along to ‘Don’t Stop Believing,’ by Journey, Elle King’s ‘Ex’s & Oh’s’ and ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ by Joan Jett.

The name of the band, known to their fellow Anderson Elementary School students as the Anderson Rock Band, is an ode to the dolphin, the school’s mascot.

The group has honed their skills through with instruction from Kirk Vickers, a local musician who band members call  Mr. Kirk.

“They have become seasoned,” Vickers said. “The first year, they only played around three songs.”

The band members choose songs and Vickers teaches them how to play it, he said.

Their favorite is ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ by Gun’s N’ Roses, Fell said.

In time they hope to move away from covering famous artists, Wink said just before Friday’s show.

“I think by middle school, I’d like to start writing my own songs,” he said.

The group has had a steady stream of gigs, from rocking out at block parties, school fundraisers, to performances at local restaurants like Sgt. Pepperoni’s Pizza Store and Campus Jax.

In April they played at Imaginology, an exhibit at the fairgrounds, and their biggest venue, the House of Blues Anaheim, where they were presented with an award for being the youngest band to ever play the venue.

They are scheduled to play the House of Blues Anaheim again on July 30.

A year ago, Barber’s mother, Karen Odell Barber, sent the OC Fair a video of the band. Fair officials invited the group to play this year.

Barber, 11, the “heart and soul of the band, according to Ecker, was the most animated, pacing around the stage while emphatically playing his guitar.

“I’ve been watching these YouTube videos of AC/DC, Van Halen and Guns N’ Roses and I’ve just been inspired at how they’re rocking the stage,” Barber said.
