Troy girls crush Sonora to finish undefeated in Freeway League

LA HABRA – The Troy girls soccer team put the finishing touches on a fourth consecutive Freeway League championship with a 4-0 victory over Sonora on Wednesday at Sonora High.

The Warriors, who cracked the list of top-10 teams in CIF-SS Division 1 this week for the first time all season, finished the regular season 16-4-4 overall and 10-0 in the Freeway League.

Anaiyah Tu’ua scored two goals and Brianna Diaz and Isabella Ales each scored a goal for Troy.

Troy outscored its league opponents by a combined 39-3 with six shutouts.

Sonora’s only legitimate scoring chance came on a corner kick in the firsts half, but Troy defenders prevented the Raiders (9-9-4, 4-3-3) from getting off a shot.

“I thought we played well,” Troy coach Mike Silzer said. “We didn’t give away any goals and everybody got to contribute which is always nice.”

The Raiders finish the regular season in third place behind Troy and Sunny Hills.

The CIF-SS playoff pairings will be announced Monday, Feb. 12.

Santa Ana girls soccer team continues to play at high level

SANTA ANA – There is a buzz around the Santa Ana High girls soccer team, as excitement builds for what could be a special season.

Coach Joel Cruz, in his ninth year with the Saints, senses that this could be his best team, as Santa Ana improved its record to 11-3 with a 4-0 win over visiting Saddleback on Tuesday. It is the Saints’ best start under Cruz.

“It is exciting,” said Cruz, whose team is ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 5. “It looks promising. Just staying healthy now is our main thing.”

The Saints looked healthy against the Roadrunners (3-3). Santa Ana dominated the first half and continually attacked with its speedy forwards, Natalie Garcia, Mayra Zarate and America Ontiveros, leading the way.

Ontiveros scored twice to up her season total to 10 goals. Zarate added a goal, as did Stephanie Navarro, all in the first half.

Garcia did not score against Saddleback but she leads the team with 14 goals.

“We are working on communication and we are working as a team,” Ontiveros said. “Last year we didn’t work as a team. It was more like individual. And now it’s more together and more as a team. That has helped us.”

Ontiveros believes the Saints can win the Golden West League title and she is hopeful Santa Ana will reach the CIF championship game. This is the Saints’ final season in the Golden West before they move into the Orange Coast League with Saddleback.

Roadrunners coach David Lopez believes he has a talented team this season but said it did not play well in the first half.

Santa Ana, which won the Westminster Classic tournament earlier this season, was at its best in the first half.

Huntington Beach girls use relentless attack to crush Dana Hills

HUNTINGTON BEACH – With less than five minutes to go and up by four goals, Huntington Beach’s girls soccer team just would not stop attacking. The Oilers continued to pepper Dana Hills’ net with shots Monday night.

Huntington Beach’s high energy, maybe from its youth, was on display and sure enough the Oilers broke through for one more goal. It was sophomore Julia Tran putting in a rebound off a nice shot from fellow sophomore Xolani Hodel. That was it. That was enough. It put an exclamation point on the Oilers’ 5-0 nonleague win over visiting Dana Hills.

Tran was one of four sophomores who scored for the No.7-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Cina Wilson connected from the left wing to start things off 25 minutes into the game.

It did not appear the Oilers were dominating in the first half, but it certainly snowballed in the second half, as Huntington Beach (5-4-2) controlled the midfield and maintained possession.

Gabi Rizzo scored twice in the second half and Hodel added a goal.

“We have only one senior and the rest are juniors and sophomores,” Huntington Beach coach Raul Ruiz said. “It’s a young team that’s actually looking forward to a great season. We are getting healthy.”

The Oilers showed that health throughout the second half when they would not quit regardless of their 4-0 lead.

“The most important thing is we always want to make sure that we are hungry,” Ruiz said. “We talked about offensively we have to be hungry every single time that we have the ball.”

Ruiz also said he was proud that every player wanted to be involved against Dana Hills (1-3).

“We need to work on more commitment,” Dana Hills coach Ziad Malkosh said. “It’s been tough with finals this week. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”
