Clippers fade against Hawks in their Las Vegas Summer League finale

LAS VEGAS — The Clippers gave their pair of lottery picks another night off as the team wrapped up Las Vegas Summer League play with a 97-81 loss to the Atlanta Hawks in a consolation game Friday night at the Thomas and Mack Center.

The Clippers led a tight game going into the fourth quarter, but Atlanta finished the game on a 21-6 run and outscored the Clippers 30-12 in the final period. There were five ties and six lead changes in the game, but poor shooting (39 percent), especially from 3-point range (3 for 21) again hurt the Clippers.

Atlanta (3-3) shot 45.5 percent from the field and was 8 for 20 from beyond the arc, while its bench outscored the short-handed Clippers 49-27. In addition to resting rookies guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jerome Robinson, the Clippers (2-4) also played without second-year guard Sindarius Thornwell.

Jordan Matthews had 18 points, four rebounds and two steals to pace the Clippers, while Jaylen Johnson added 16 points and six rebounds off the bench. Reggie Upshaw contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, and Jawun Evans had 10 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Robert Johnson led the Atlanta starters with 18 points, but the Hawks got some of their best contributions from their bench. Junior Robinson had 20 points, Alpha Kaba added 14 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocked shots and Brandon Sampson had 15 points and six rebounds.

Clippers pull away from Kings in fourth quarter at Las Vegas Summer League

LAS VEGAS — Second-year guard Sindarius Thornwell and rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had solid all-around games, and the Clippers pulled away in the fourth quarter to outlast the Sacramento Kings 88-78 in a Las Vegas Summer League game on Sunday night at Cox Pavilion.

Thornwell paced the Clippers (1-1) with 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot, going 7 for 12 from the field, including 3 for 6 from 3-point range. Gilgeous-Alexander had 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals and was 8 for 16 from the field (1 for 3 from 3-point range). Second-year guard Jawun Evans added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.

Rookie guard Jerome Robinson, the Clippers’ other lottery pick last month, was held out for rest, but he is expected to play Monday night against Houston.

Tied 66-66 after three quarters, the Clippers took advantage of Sacramento’s late shooting woes to outscore the Kings 22-12 in the final period. The Kings shot just 6 for 20 from the field in the quarter and scored just two points in the final 3:45 while turning it over four times. The Clippers outrebounded the Kings 47-38.

Justin Jackson scored 28 points to lead the Kings, going 4 for 7 from 3-point range. The rest of the Kings (0-2) went 0 for 10 from beyond the arc. Frank Mason added 12 points and six assists, Harry Giles added eight points and five rebounds and Zach Auguste contributed eight points and 10 rebounds for the Kings.

The Clippers and the Rockets square off on Monday at 8:30 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
